San Antonio is a beautiful city. The area we’ll be staying near is the heart of San Antonio known as the “River Walk”. The Holiday Inn sits right on the river and it’s a short walk to the numerous restaurants, bars and shopping. The River Walk’s new Museum Reach opened in May 2009 and stretches north along the San Antonio River, and connects the existing River Walk to the San Antonio Museum of Art and the 125-year-old Pearl Brewery, a vibrant urban village. New public art installations, by local, national and international artists, line the banks. A “river taxi” is available to take you to all points on the river.

The Alamo is a short walk from the hotel and is a must see for any San Antonio visitors. A trolley system runs throughout the downtown area. Route maps for both the riverwalk and trolley system will be available at the hotel.

Another interesting area to visit is El Mercado (Mexican Market). It’s the largest Mexican market outside of Mexico. You can shop there without the fear of getting caught in a cross fire. (Trolley service is available to/from El Mercado.)

The city will be hosting it’s annual Veterans Day Parade downtown during our stay.

CAP Association

The CAP Association depends on members paying annual dues in order to survive. This association is truly a NON-profit organization, normally operating near a zero balance before a reunion and/or newsletter is published. The registration fee normally covers the liquor, beer, soda, snacks kept in the hospitality suite during the reunion. The annual raffle held during the reunion covers most of our losses on tours/etc. Please keep in mind we do our best to keep all the reunion costs to a minimum, by sending out point men to find the best hotel at the best price, getting discounts on as many events as possible. This is your organization, established for an elite group of Marines.

Some of the events we are planning:

• Reception/registration

• Evening dinner cruise on the river.

• Dinner banquet at hotel

• Guided river tour.

• USMC Ball (if available while we’re there) (We’ll be checking with reserve centers/MCLs) Of course we are all aware USMC Birthday balls are not scheduled far in advance. We’ve got 2 retired 1stSgts in the area that will do their best to get us tickets to the ball in 2010.

• Let’s rodeo every Saturday night March through November at The Tejas Rodeo Company! This tour package includes roundtrip transportation, entrance fees, a fantastic Texas B-B-Q dinner, and an authentic Texas Rodeo with bull riding, calf roping, and barrel racing! After the rodeo, enjoy live music and dancing, plus you can try your hand at being a cowboy on the mechanical bull! I’ll arrange discounted group tickets for this event.
